What is Kiwanis?

“Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis believes the most effective way to enhance a community is to enhance its children. When you give a child a chance to learn, experience, dream, and succeed, great things will happen.“

Kiwanis Clubs sponsor Kiwanis family organizations that provide young people and adults with opportunities to perform community service and develop leadership skills. One act of kindness can change the course of a life, proving that just one person can make a difference. Kiwanians have helped eradicate diseases, build schools, shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, and generate MILLIONS of SMILES.

Kiwanis members are service-minded men and women united in their commitment to and compassion for others. They dedicate more than six million volunteer hours and invest more than US$100 million annually in projects that strengthen communities and serve children. Kiwanians, through guidance and example, work to prepare today's children to be tomorrow's citizens.

Do you want to help children, meet quality people and share in some rewarding and fun times? Come have a good time while helping children. Come join us and be our guest at our upcoming Tuesday meetings. Together we can and help us make the world a better place, one child and one smile at a time.

The Mount Vernon Club

The Mount Vernon Kiwanis club was created in 1927 by a group of area business people. The club started with 35 members with Robert W. Stevens as the first president.

The club currently has a membership of 29 as of January 2011. We meet for lunch each Tuesday at Western Hills Country Club. We have a relatively young club with the majority of our members in their 40's and 50's with a handful of retirees. We have a number of committees that are responsible for various functions of the club. Our current service projects include support of a variety of kid's focused groups including Posey County Young Life and supports the Mount Vernon High School Key club and the Mount Vernon Junior High Builder’s Club which provides leadership experience and teaches the benefits of volunteering and getting involved.

The club also undertakes other volunteering projects including an annual Easter Egg Hunt, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army and “adopts” needy families during Christmas to help make their seasons a bit brighter with gifts of toys and clothes. The Club also established the Kiwanis Memorial Scholarship at the Posey County Community Foundation. The annual scholarship is a leadership-based scholarship which honors the memory of former Kiwanis member Phil Ray for his many contributions and service to Kiwanis, the Metropolitan School District of Mt. Vernon, the students and staff of West Elementary School, and the community of Mt. Vernon. Our primary fund raiser is a 10K fun run held on the third Saturday of September.

Please feel free to join us at one of our meetings and enjoy some good fellowship. Come and “help serve the children of the world.”
